The Primary Issue: American children, particularly those in underserved communities, lack access to intercultural curriculum and programming. Developing empathy and confidence requires early exposure. These skills are essential building blocks for personal growth and financial success in our society.
The Secondary Issue: Deeper engagement with the Asia-Pacific is essential for the United States’ future prosperity, peace, and security. The United States, on a national level, must develop a corps of bilingual leaders that reflect the full diversity of its populace. The Mission: MM uses language learning and exploration to empower students from homogeneous communities to develop intercultural empathy and confidence. The Vision: MM equips under-resourced students with tools to develop foundational intercultural life skills. In the long term, these students will become a new generation of diverse Chinese-speaking leaders. How We Serve: We champion a simple and straightforward approach to these challenges at the school, community, and national levels. At a school level, the social issue we address is access to Mandarin language curriculum. We value language learning as a vehicle for developing intercultural confidence. We aim to bring these opportunities to classrooms around the country, starting in the City of Baltimore. At a community level, the social challenge we address is an increase in ethno-centrism and racism throughout America. Working with community partners, our goal is to expose students to a world outside of their own -- providing tools to develop intercultural empathy and confidence in their community and beyond. On a national level, MM addresses social challenges of access and equity. In the past 40 years, U.S.-China relations have evolved dramatically but unequally. Deeper engagement is essential for the US’ future prosperity, peace, and security. MM will develop the next generation of bilingual leaders that reflect the full diversity of America. Thanks for joining us on our journey!
